The Derby GP Specialty Training Programme is a well-established, friendly and innovative training scheme. The scheme has now been in existence for over 30 years. The Derby training programme continues to attract high quality candidates, producing excellent principals at the end of the three-year period. And the opportunities don't stop at the end of your training. Many of our trainees continue to practice in Derby and southern Derbyshire after their training, with a high proportion joining us as Trainers.
Graduates of the programme have had a very high rate of success. These impressive results are due to the efforts, not only of the GP Registrars, but also those of a very dedicated and enthusiastic team of Programme Directors, Trainers and Administrators.
The programme is structured as follows:
- 20 months spent in General Practice, four months blocks in Years 1 & 2 with a final twelve months in Year 3.
- The remaining sixteen months is spent in four months hospital posts.
- The hospital posts are at ST 1 & 2 level, contracted to hospital trusts.
- Registrars will be under contract to the appropriate practices during their general practice attachment.
We have close relationships with the consultants and GPs in the area which enables us to ensure that all trainees receive the best experience for the duration of the programme.
The majority of hospital posts are based in the university-linked Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, at the Royal Derby Hospital with some at linked Nottingham hospitals. Our team make every effort to personally match your hospital posts with your previous experience. We aim to provide a flexible approach, so in some cases alternatives may be possible.
Training practices linked to the programme vary from urban to surburban to rural locations. All offer a very high standard of training and support, offering trainees the very best opportunity to develop into to confident and competent GPs.
Whilst we are unable to offer Dermatology posts, there is the opportunity for a trainee per rotation in the second year to spend two sessions per week out of practice with the Dermatology department at London Road Community Hospital. Those trainees who are not due to undertake a Paediatrics post during the GP Specialty Training programme, due to there being insufficient 4 month posts for all trainees, will be offered an Innovative Training Post (ITP - click here for more details) in Paediatrics in their ST2 year.
HALF DAY RELEASE EDUCATION
Throughout the three years there is a Half Day Release (HDR) Teaching Programme held on Wednesday afternoons in the Education Centre, Royal Derby Hospital. The Half Day Release Programme is well supported by the GP Trainers, with an experienced GP present at each teaching session. This ensures that the GP focus is maintained throughout the teaching.
You, the registrars, compose and lead this programme, and although guidance and support are provided by the Programme Directors and Trainers, it is expected that ownership of these sessions is held by the trainees. Support is provided by the Programme Directors during the first year of the programme to introduce trainees to education and the programme. By the middle of the second year of the programme, the teaching is purely self directed learning.
The registrars feel this hands on approach is far more relevant to working as a GP than didactic teaching. All meet for an informal lunch before the teaching and every fortnight all 3 years meet together providing a valued time for bonding with friends and colleagues.
Our registrars symposium for 1st and 3rd Years is a highlight of the year. This lively course takes the form of 2 days out of placement and provides an excellent opportunity to meet your peer group, get to know the Programme Directors and get essential information about the programme.
Derby is a vibrant and attractive University City, less than 20 miles from some the most beautiful countryside in Great Britain. It is the UK's most central city with a wealth of things to do. The excellent road, rail and air links mean that London is only 1.5 hours away by train, Manchester is less than 2 hours by car and East Midlands Airport is only 20 minutes from the city centre. Derbyshire and the City of Derby have diverse health challenges. Current priorities for the NHS in Derby and Derbyshire include reducing the prevalence of smoking, improving diabetic control, obesity management, improving mental health, reducing infanct mortality and improving sexual health.
